Q&A with Livvi

Work placement week with a dozen eggs

We’ve had an extra Egg with us this week!  Livvi is a work placement student studying for her GCSEs.  As part of her placement she’s been shadowing our designers and learning the essentials of branding.  Making mood boards, designing page layouts and posters, learning to use our design programmes, she threw herself into everything.  We were all very impressed!

So Livvi, why did you decide to do your work placement at a dozen eggs?

I’ve always been interested in making posters and other projects at school (despite not being very good at art!), and I was really interested in how this could be done on a computer and even be made into a website or packaging, etc. I also wanted to figure out how to use different software that I hadn’t ever used before.

What did you hope you would learn about during the week?

I definitely wanted to see how drawings and text were created on a computer, and I also wanted to try and improve my computer editing skills, especially since I hadn’t used most of the software before coming on my work placement. I was also really interested to learn how a design can be made from scratch

How has being in an office been different from your normal day?

My hours here compared with school are pretty similar, so the main difference was the fact that the office is much smaller than any of my classes at school! I’m using a computer for the majority of work here too, and I never normally would at school.  Also I don’t have to wear a uniform here like I do at school, which is obviously a great bonus!

You’ve tried a lot of new things this week.  What was your favourite?

I think that using programmes like Adobe Illustrator was my favourite part, because I loved how I could replicate hand drawn pages on the computer, and use lots of other effects, pictures and fonts that I wouldn’t be able to on paper.  It was really fun to experiment with new tools and create my own work from scratch

What was the most challenging thing for you?

The most challenging thing this week was probably making moodboards. I struggled with this, because I’m not the best at explaining/justifying my choices; and it was hard to find different pictures that all matched multiple different themes.

Out of everything you’ve made this week, what are you most proud of?

I’m probably most proud of either my festival poster, because I made it from scratch and found all of the fonts/pictures myself and I also got to use all of the skills I had learnt that week; or my ShoeZone email design, because it was the first proper document I made on Illustrator without using a hand drawn idea or a template!
